VitalStim® Therapy for Dysphagia

An estimated 15 million Americans are afflicted with Dysphagia, a condition that causes discomfort or difficulty swallowing. At its most severe - when patients entirely lose their ability to eat - Dysphagia can profoundly disrupt a life. Dysphagia is common among stroke survivors, patients with neurological disorders like Parkinson's Disease, and patients with head and neck cancer.  It disproportionately affects the elderly, and success with existing treatments has been limited at best.

Lakeland Health Care Center is proud to be one of a few select providers in the country to offer VitalStim® Therapy, an exciting new therapy, and the first proven treatment for Dysphagia. VitalStim® is the only Dysphagia therapy backed by compelling clinical data and cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  VitalStim Therapy uses small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. At the same time, a trained specialist helps patients "re-educate" their muscles through rehabilitation therapy.  For more information regarding VitalStim® Therapy, including contraindications, adverse effects and cautions, please follow this link http://www.vitalstim.com/aboutvs.asp.
