LSVT/LOUD® Therapy for Parkinson's Disease
Research demonstrates that 89 percent of people with Parkinsonís Disease (PD) experience speech and voice disorders, including soft voice, monotone, breathiness, hoarse voice quality and imprecise articulation. Persons with Parkinsonís therefore report that they are less likely to participate in conversations, or to have confidence in social settings, than healthy individuals in their age group.
Lakeland Health Care Center is proud to be one of a few centers in the United States that offers the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT/LOUD®) method, an innovative therapy for persons with Parkinsonís Disease. LSVT/LOUD® improves vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanism through a systematic hierarchy of exercises. Focused on a single goal "speak LOUD!," the treatment improves respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility.
LSVT/LOUD® uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness level with no strain, rather than training people for shouting and yelling. LSVT/LOUD® has helped many individuals with Parkinsonís disease and speech problems, giving them new hope for improved communication LSVT/LOUD® empowers individuals by enabling them to maintain or regain functioning in their workplace or home environment, which enhances self-confidence and quality of life.
